THE FILM
Joe collects himself and ends up passing out for the rest of night. He wakes up and gets dressed and leaves everything behind except the gun and the film. He boards the plane. He sits there with a dead and cold look on his face, like he just killed his own family. The plane ride is a little bumpy but they fly over a castle. Joe doesn't even look out the window to see it. The plane lands on a airstrip. A guy gets Joe up from him seat and leads him to a door under the castle. Joe is in a trancelike state. He is not noticing anything around him. He is finally lead down some stairs and is finally in front of the Man in the High Castle. He is sitting on a couch watching one of the films that the Resistance gave him. Joe finally snaps out of it and his face is in utter shock. The man stands up and turns to him and all Joe can say is. Get on the boat. Don't ask any questions and don't talk to anyone else on this boat, ok? But why? Because I said so, Juliana. Just get on and be quiet. We don't want to draw any attention to us. Lem you got front and I'll get back, ok? After a long and wet boat ride the group finally made it to Mexico. Lemmel and Karen disembark first and begin walking towards the town unfazed by the densely packed crowd around them. Juliana, Frank, and Joe got off the boat more cautiously, and notice that there are no Nazi or Japanese in sight. This country isn't ruled by a foreign power, it is rather run by the drug lords. As they walk through the outskirts of town, they see a man selling fish that look like they have been there for months; people are crowding around him forcing their way to the front to try to buy to eat. Even rotten fish is still food. They then see a woman with her three kids sitting on the edge of the dock, sharing one fish between them, they looked sad and depressed their clothes are all torn and worn. One of the kids sees Juliana and gets up and runs to her. She is giving the universal sign for begging, so Juliana automatically thinks she is asking for food. Juliana looks at the little girl her feet are almost black from having nothing to cover them. The little girls is dirty and has cuts and bruises all over her. Juliana's face is in shock and tears are welling up in her eyes. The people that live here look depressed and beat down. None of them are dressed well. Frank can't believe what he is seeing either. They head deeper into town and it is covered with people the population of this small town is rather large for its size. They are being pushed around, people are bumping into them. There is so much sound, it is deafening. You can barely hear yourself think. Joe is quickly getting overwhelmed by all of it, so he tries to hide in a store to hopefully get a just a second of peace and quite. However he soon find out that the store they go into isn't a store. There are kids sitting at four different tables cutting up drugs and putting them in packages. The children look like they have been working for hours with no break. The room is so hot it is almost as if you walked into a sauna. Behind them are men with MP-40s. They see Joe and scream at him in a language he doesn't understand. As they pull their guns up, Juliana goes into the store and pulls Joe out of there. They are aliens in a new world and they have no idea what to do. Lemmel and Karen aren't fazed by any of this. Ok Joe what now? What did your contact say next? He said for me to call him once I reached Mexico. Just let me find a phone. Joe finally finds a phone. He picks it up and dials a number. [phone rings] [phone rings again] Hello? Hey I need to speak to the Obergruppenführer. Joe, is that you? Yes, tell him I made it to Mexico. Ok, hold on one sec. Hello Joe. How was your trip? Good I hope. Yes sir, it was fine. Good, good rather wet huh? I am guessing you are calling because your little Resistance friends have no idea what to do next. Let me just get to the point Joe, the film is in the town you are at. But sir, how is that possible that the boat we got on took us to the exact same town that the film is in? Joe you really think that boat you got on was random? You really underestimate my powers here, Joe. I am always watching, Joe. I know every move you make, I know everything you do, I know when you will wake up and what you will eat for breakfast Joe. Everything you do is because I let it happen. That boat was owned by us. Do you really think that you would have made it there with no resistance at all? I made sure that the waters were clear. Joe clinches his fist in anger. I had no idea sir. I'm sorry. Ok Joe, so the film is owned by the drug lord that runs and owns this town. He lives on the big white house overlooking the town. He is a very dangerous man. If he believes you are a danger to him, he will instantly kill you without hesitation. So find a way to get a meeting with him. Joe, best of luck to you. Heil Hitler. Heil Hitler. Joe hangs up the phone and finds everyone sitting at a table. So what did he say? Well, I got good news and I have bad news. The good news is that we got lucky and the film is in this town. What are the odds that the film we are looking for is in the town that we docked at? Never mind that all that matters is that the film is here and we don't have to walk far to get it. Ok, what's the bad news? The bad news is that the drug lord that owns this town has it. He lives up in that house up there. Joe points to the huge white house sitting on a tall hill overlooking the town. Ok, now leave the rest to us. There are some Resistance members here that might be able to help us. They live in a house that is just outside of town. They head out of town to a lone house. It is a dilapidated house the paint practically gone and the windows are either broken or completely gone. Karen and Lemmel do a secret knock on the door and a man opens the door. Ok, you three wait outside for us. They don't like strangers. We shouldn't be long, ok? I guess we have no choice, do we? No you don't. Juliana, Frank, and Joe sit outside. The heat starts to finally get to them and they are sweating heavily. Frank is pacing back and fourth, which makes Juliana and Joe uneasy and nervous. What if they can't get help? What if they aren't able to set a meeting up? What if we can't get the film? Frank is going on and on and you can see on Joe's face that it is getting on his nerves, question after question. Joe is getting more and more anxious. Frank shut the hell up please. We just have to have faith in them. Frank finally stops and sits next to Juliana and she rest her head on his shoulder. He kisses her forehead, trying to comfort her. Lemmel and Karen finally come out of the house. Ok we have a meeting tonight. But its going to be risky. The guys here have been trying to kill this lord for a long time now. In exchange for getting this meeting they want us to kill the drug lord. What? How are we going to do that with no guns? They will give us some pistols to sneak in to kill him. No, I will not kill anyone. Juliana we don't have the luxury to do whatever you want right now. I don't care. I won't kill a man in cold blood regardless of what he has done. Just give me the gun. Frank no, you can't kill anyone. Jules, don't worry .I will only use if it needs to be used. Ok, we will get a hotel room so we have a place to lay low after we are done. Once we get this film we have been told to head back and give it directly to the Man in the High Castle. I want you all to know that if any of us die no matter what we keep the mission going. Do you understand? They head up the hill to his house and they immediately notice how well fortified his house is. There are two towers, each one with a sniper on top of it. The men look down at them from there towers. Ok, so once we get in and see the film, Lem and I will get it. The other resistance member will take care of the guys out here so we don't have to worry about that. They head inside the main gate of the house. The place is covered with armed men. Some with MP-40's others with just pistols. As they are walking in, they see a bunch of men in a circle and in the middle of them is a ring where they are having cock fights. Juliana is disgusted by what they are doing. There is blood covering the floor and walls of this small ring. Men are screaming and throwing money into the ring. They walk through the front door of the house and head to what seems to be the main room. The drug lord is sitting on what looks to be a throne. Next to him are women cutting up drugs on a table then snorting it. The drug lord starts to laugh as they walk into the house. Behind him are two men with MP-40s. Karen and Lemmel step towards him and begin to talk to him in a language that Juliana, Joe, and Frank don't understand. The drug lord gets up and goes to a box and takes out the film. Lemmel looks at Karen and nods. They pull their pistols out and start to shoot at the drug lord. A few of there bullets hit the drug lord killing him. The two guards with him start shooting as well. Everything is almost in slow mo in Juliana's eyes bullets are flying everywhere. The girls that were snorting drugs get up and run at room. One of the guards kits Karen multiple times, killing her. Her body falls to floor and the film flies out of her hand and lands in front of Joe. He picks it up. Juliana looks over at Karen and she sees her lifeless body lying there with her eyes wide open looking at Juliana. Frank grabs Juliana by the hand and run out of the house. While running away, Lemmel is shot in the back but continues to run. Joe is right behind them running. Once they get outside, it is a war zone. Bullets are flying left and right and one bullet hits Joe, but it only grazes him. They hide behind some barrels Joe notices that the gate to the house is open and they make a break for it. They get into town Lemmel falls over Juliana tries to pick him up from behind but she cant lift him so Frank and Joe help Lemmel by picking him up and taking him to the hotel, but he is bleeding badly. They get into the room and lay him on the bed. He is coughing up blood and it looks like there is nothing they can do. He looks at them and says, Get this film to where it needs to be. Make sure my wife and kids know that I died a hero. Please finish this for me, please take my country back. With his last breath, his eyes close and he just lies there, lifeless. Juliana is in tears in the corner, covered in Lemmel's blood. Frank runs to Juliana and makes sure that she is ok. Joe pulls out the film and puts it on the table. They wrap Lemmel in a blanket and take him outside to bury him. All of them still covered in Lemmel's blood. What are we going to do about Karen? Juliana, she is dead. There is no way that we can go get her. The least we can do for Lem is to give him a proper burial. They bury Lemmel and head back to the hotel. They all then try to fall asleep and when they wake up tomorrow morning they know they need to make a plan to get out of there. The next morning, Joe wakes up first and heads out. Juliana hears him leave, so she gets up and follows him without him knowing. Joe heads to the phone he used to call the Obergruppenführer. He picks up the phone and calls him again. [phone rings] [rings again] Juliana is hiding behind a wall near him so she can hear everything that he is saying. Hello, it's Joe Blake. Please put the Obergruppenführer on. It's important. Good morning, Joe. Any new updates on your mission? Yes sir. I have the film, but I heard that once we get the film that the Man in the High Castle wants this directly taken to him, sir. Change of plans then Joe, go to where ever this meeting was suppose to be and kill that man. Yes sir. Joe, regardless of what happens, you will be a hero to the Nazi regime. If you do not make it back I will make sure that your loved ones will be taken care of and safe from any harms. Thank you Obergruppenführer. Heil Hitler. Juliana eyes widen when she hears Joe say that. She runs back to the hotel room to tell Frank. She rushes into the room and slams the door. Frank, Joe is a Nazi agent. He isn't working for the resistance at all. Wait, what? Juliana how do you know this? I heard Joe get up early and I decided to follow him. He got to a phone and called someone. I over heard him say Obergruppenführer and heil Hitler. He is working for them. He has been lying to us this whole time. Shit, I knew it. Did he bring his gun with him? I don't know lets look for it. Juliana and Frank frantically are looking for the gun that Joe had. Juliana finally finds it and hides it. What do we do now? We have to confront him about it. Make sure you have the film on you. Do not let him get it. The door knob of the hotel room turns and in walks Joe. He has what looks to be food with him. Hey, I thought you might be up so I brought some food. I have no idea what any of it is but it at least it is something, right? Juliana is trying to play it cool. Her hands are touching her neck which is a sign that she is nervous and uncomfortable. Is that where you went so early? To get us food? Yeah. Sorry, did I wake you up? No you're fine. Thanks for the food. They all sit down at the table eating what Joe brought back with him. The tension around this table is thick. You can feel it. Frank and Juliana keep looking at each other. Joe is getting a weird vibe from them as well. So how are we getting out of this place? I mean we don't have Lemmel or Karen anymore. Let's go back to the house were they talked to the other Resistance members. Maybe they could help us. They all get dressed and Juliana takes the film with her and Frank has Joe's gun. Do you guys know where I put that gun at? I thought we buried the guns. I buried mine right next to Lemmel, remember? Oh yeah, I forgot. It was so crazy last night, it's all just a blur to me now. They head back to the house that they went to the night before. They try to do the knock that Karen did. A man opens the door; he has a bandage over his eye. The guy remembers them from yesterday so he lets them in. They walk into the house there are men laying on the floor with sheets over them. The guy tells them to sit down at the table and they do. I know you probably don't understand us, but how are we going to get to the meeting with the Man in the High Castle? The man speaks some English, but it is very broken. You take plane. You give tape. Meet here at point. He pulls out a map and points to a spot on it and its a airstrip. You say no words you go there, small plane pick you up, take you to country, meet man and give film. He hands them the map so they can use it to get to the airstrip. He makes them get up and leave. You go there in morning, plane will be ready go. He slams the door. Ok, what do we do in the meantime then while we wait? I have no idea. I guess we just wait then. Well I'm going to Lemmel's grave to pay respect. Sounds good. We can go there tonight. Let's go back to the hotel and try to have another rest. They head back to the hotel and rest a little more. They wait and wait. Juliana and Frank try to think of a way to deal with Joe. The anger inside Juliana is building in her head as she wonders how could he do this to them. She thinks about the time he saved her life in Canon City. The whole time he was just lying. Night falls. The group can tell because the sounds of animals start to get louder and people start to get quieter. They head to where they buried Lemmel. It's right by what looks like a huge ditch. Joe goes to Lemmel's grave and gets on one knee and starts to pray. Juliana pulls the gun out and puts it to the back of Joe's head. Juliana is this what your heart is telling you? My heart tells me he is a good man. He's a...he's a brave man who...who must have good reason for...betraying his people. But my head? My head says that we should take him out in the woods, interrogate him, shoot him in the fucking face. Juliana says all of this with a gun pointed at Joe. How could you lie to me? You told me you were working for the resistance, but all along you were a fucking Nazi agent? You lied to me. Juliana you got to trust me I do not work for them. Who can I believe, Joe, I have proof? Juliana, I promise I do not work for them anymore. Remember when you asked me back in Canon City if I watched the film? Well, I did. It changed my view on everything. I found myself wondering if the Germans were doing everything wrong. I mean for Christ sakes they burn people just for being different. That is not a world that I want to live in. I changed my mind, Juliana I want to make the world a better place. I can’t believe you, Joe. You lied to me before and you could easily lie to me again. Juliana, please just give me one more chance. She pulls the gun back. Joe gets up grabs the gun from Juliana. You should have never believed me. Joe please don- All you hear is a single gunshot. Heil Hitler. Frank runs to Juliana's body, holding her tight screaming and crying. You Nazi fuck. We weren't going to fucking kill you, you fucking piece of shit. Frank lunges at Joe. During the tussle, the gun goes off and Frank falls on top of Joe. The bullet hit him right in his chest. Joe gets up with Juliana and Frank's blood all over him. He heads back to the hotel to get cleaned up. After he is done cleaning up, all he does is cry. Why does it have to be like this? I am so sorry. Mine Führer.

Everyone has some form of social media. But is social media secretly turning our world into a dystopia? Is it making people become less caring? Would you rather post something that gets more "likes" and comments or post something that will actually help people? I see countless fight videos on Facebook. But instead of filming, why don't the people behind the camera try to stop it? I believe that because of social media people are becoming less compassionate. Some may argue that social media has a positive impact on the world. However,I feel as though the vast majority of people that use social media are making this world into a dystopia. The three outcomes of social media that I believe are contributing to a dystopia are cyber bullying, people who would rather post than participate, and the easier spread of fake news.
I will start with cyber bullying. This has become a major topic in the world recently. Cyber bullying is when people attack others online because it it easier for them to say mean things when they can hide behind their computer. It's even worse when they use a social media platform that allows them to be anonymous. They don't see the effects of what their words do to people. As an example, I am going to talk about a 2012 case involving a girl named Amanda Todd. Amanda started to use video chatting to try and make new friends over the internet. One stranger convinced her to show her breasts to him. However, that stranger then used the pictures to blackmail this poor girl by creating fake profiles with her picture of her showing her breasts as a profile picture. This man ended up becoming become a stalker - every time Amanda would move schools, this stalker would go undercover and make another Facebook profile. Amanda made a Youtube video to talk about her bullying, her self harm, and potential suicide. She posted that video on September 7th, 2012. About a month later, Amanda hung herself. There are countless stories like this all over the place. People, especially young people, can't escape cyber bullying because the internet is everywhere. Amanda's video is posted below.
My next point is that social media makes people less likely to step into a situation because they are too busy filming it in the hope that it will go viral. Before social media, if a fight broke out, some people would watch, but people were more likely to step in and break it out. Now, iIf a fight break outs, all people do is pull out their cell phones and record it to post it online later. No one steps in and stops the fight. People are behind their phones laughing and having a good time while people will brutally beat each other up. Or they think to themselves how this video is going to get them famous when it gets shown on the news. A recent example occurred when a the man that was forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight. There are many videos of this incident on the internet right now, but one stands out to me more then the others. That is the video that shows the man being pulled by his arms and the other passengers are just sitting there filming this. No one is stepping up and saying that they will take his place. Everyone is too busy recording the incident or saying out loud that this is wrong. Not a single person stood up and took his place because people are being desensitized to events like this. After the event was posted and circulated both online and in the news, when others would talk about it they would claim that if they were on that flight, they would have done something to stop this man from being kicked off. But I wonder if they really would or they would just be another person filming it. Another example is the website, which has videos of people who have filmed fights and other extreme events where they could have stepped in and stopped what was going on. But instead, they decided to pull out their cell phones out and try to get famous for it. People care too much about their popularity or how many views or likes they can get rather then doing what is right or just simply helping someone. This is how people of The Man in the High Castle are. They stand idly by and watch people being arrested or killed for nothing. Because they are scared or are so used to it happening around them, they pay no mind to it. There is a scene where Japanese soldiers are taking people and executing them in front of other people just to show their strength and people are just watching. No one tries to stand up and fight back; they are just content with going with the flow of the world.
My third and final point is that social media allows for the spread of fake news. Social media sites like Facebook make it easier for people to not just share their own news, but world and local news stories as well. Sometimes people share articles from legitimate news sources such as The Washington Post or The New York Times. Sometimes, however, they will knowingly or unknowingly share articles that aren't true and haven't been fact checked by legitimate journalists. Fake news really became popular during the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election when some people felt that the spreading of fake news stories that painted Hillary Clinton in a negative light led to Donald Trump's win. Some of the stories were downright lies, others were half-truths, all were created as click-bait in order to drive more eyes to the website and thus more advertising dollars. According to David Pogue's article in Scientific American, 44% of American adults receive their news from Facebook. Additionally, the top 20 articles circulating on Facebook that were false received more clicks than the top 20 articles that were true. And more clicks means more money for those sites. Although fake news can't be entirely blocked (as the article suggested, what do we do about satirical articles?) Facebook is making efforts to reduce it by adding warning labels to articles that users have marked as false. However, once a story, especially a conspiracy story, gets lodged in someone's brain, it can be hard to shake it out. And social media just makes it easier and faster to spread these stories (2017). Social media is leading to a dystopian world because it allows people to cyber bully others, makes people more interested in posting a video than stopping something that they could easily prevent, and makes it easier to spread false stories. Yes, social media can be a valuable tool for people to share their achievements or connect with others who have similar values. It can help with organizing marches or relaying information about safe passages for refugees. But you can't have light without darkness, and social media continues to show its dark and ugly underside. Bibliography Pogue, David. "How to Stamp out Fake News." The hills are white. They shine with a bright intensity so that sometimes it is hard to even look at them. A man sits on them pondering what he should do with his life. He is young and recently married. He just lays back and looks up at the blue sky; it seems even brighter then usual, almost like the blue is vibrating with color. The clouds go by and he calls out what shapes he sees. "Oh look an elephant, a bunny, a very weird looking T-rex." This man is Chris and he is the hero of this story. Now, when I say hero, I don't mean like a knight fighting off a dragon. I mean a hero in the sense that he is just like you and me - he doesn't know what he wants. He hasn't found his groove. He has been sitting here for two days trying to figure out how to write what he wants to write. The stories he reads get lost in his head. Thoughts dance around like a breeze in the wind. In one ear and out the other. He reads the stories over and over again. The images he makes run wild. The cloud he called an elephant starts to move towards him. It lands on top of the hill that Chris is laying on. Chris gets up and looks at it and the elephant stares back at him. It is a cloud, there is nothing to see, yet Chris can feels its eyes staring at him, telling him that he will eventually figure out that what is blocking his path is something he can easily climb over. So Chris sits up and begins to write and write and write. He has done it; what needed to be done is done. He slams the book closed and looks up at the sky, but to his surprise there is no sky. He isn't on the same white hill he was on. The elephant is gone. He looks around and he sees yellow. He looks down and he is in a chair. He gets up to head to the door but it is locked. There are bars on the windows; it's like a prison. He begins to feel trapped and doesn't know what to do. Suddenly, a woman is seen in the wallpaper. He can barely make her out. He is trying to read between the lines and understand why she is there. But it is hard for him to see it. He looks again; still nothing that he can figure out. The woman is moving around the room like a ghost haunting him. The woman gets behind him and he can feel her hands on him. She is trying to pull him into the wallpaper. He thinks that this is the point where he just fades away into the wallpaper and doesn't figure out what his problem is. He is about to let go when he remembers the elephants. He remembers that he climbed over that obstacle with ease. Chris begins to fight back pulling himself away from the woman. He finally breaks free and he looks at her. She is crying. "Are you ok?," he asks in a faint voice. "Do you need anything?" She looks at him but even though she has no eyes, Chris can feel her stare. He can feel her gaze on him. He then is able to read between the lines of this story. He opens up his book and begins to write and write and finally when he is done he closes the book. The yellow wallpaper room is gone. He is back home sitting down and everything is ok. He sees that he isn't lost anymore. Like I said our hero doesn't slay a dragon or kill a giant. He is just like you and me. He gets lost sometimes but eventually he finds his way. Our hero concurred the tales of Hills Like White Elephants and The Yellow Wallpaper.
1. Man in the High Castle impacted my thinking of what motifs I want in my own pieces. It made me think if I put this here will the reader understand it or just read past it. It made me think that even the tiniest of information can be valuable to story or a show or anything.
2. The micro fictions that we read made me think about each word. It made me think that every word counts when I use to think that it didn't. It made me realize how hard it is to take put some much meaning into only a few short words. 3.I read a lot of manga I love it. So reading manga helps me with reading others writing that doesn't have pictures in it. I can make up a picture in my head and play the scene that they writing is trying to convey. It helps me get through reading because I have a very sort attention span. http://www.sabatinomangini.com/uploads/4/5/9/6/4596832/assignment_sheet__mihc_fan_fiction_eng_112.pdf
My fan fiction doesn't follow a set episode. It is something in its own if I had to put it in a time frame I would say between episode 1 to episode 8 THE FILM The film that could end this all, the film that everybody wanted. This film could change the mind of any Nazi or Japanese. Where is it now? No one knows yet, but the Man in the High Castle says he wants it. Do you ever wonder who this man is? Juliana, he gives us information to fight against them to get our country back. I don't care who the hell he is. If he can give me back my country, I'll give him whatever damn tape he wants. Fine, Karen, but how do we get a film that we don't even know where it is? I don't know, but we gotta think of something. Maybe Joe knows where we can get it. He always seems to have information that we don't. I don't trust him, Juliana, he is very shady. Well he saved my life once. I think we can trust him I really do. What do you think Frank? Whatever you say. If you trust him and he did save your life then I trust him. Fine, get in contact with him tell him we need to set up a meeting and figure all of this out. [phone rings] [rings again] Hello? Hey Joe, it's Juliana. Hey what's up? Something wrong? Are you ok? Yeah I am fine, I just called to ask for some help. Do you think you can help us? Sure, what do you need? Have you heard about this new film that could change the world? Yeah I have. The Nazis are really spooked by it. Why, what have you heard? Not much, just that its a very very important one and the Resistance is trying to get it and is asking me for help. Well Juliana, I can see what some of my contacts say. Just give me a few days to get some information and we can meet. Ok Joe, thank you so much. We can meet in three days by the docks pier fourteen. Ok I got Juliana. I will be there and I will try to get as much information I can. T hanks Joe. Joe picks up the phone after hanging up with Juliana. He types in a number. Hello Joe. What news do you have for me? Hello Obergruppenführer. Have you heard about a new tape that could change everything? Yes we have. What have you heard? Well the girl Juliana Crain just called me saying that the Resistance is looking for it and asked me for some help. Well, looks like we are going to be giving them some help aren't we. Do you have any leads or anything? Well Joe it just so happens I do. This film is supposedly being held somewhere in Mexico, right on the border. So you tell your Resistance friends that and when you find the film I want you to kill everyone there. I don't care if you have feelings for this girl, I want you to shoot her. If I find out that you got this film and didn't kill them and spared their lives then I will have to kill you and your little buddy then. Joe clinches his fist. Yes Obergruppenführer. Heil Hitler. Heil Hitler. Three days later. So Joe what do you have for us? Any information? Actually, yes I do. I have heard from some sources that the tape is actually in Mexico right on the border. Interesting. Where did you get this information from? I got it from a very reliable source. Oh and what source is that? Well, I have a contact with a Nazi agent that is trying to join our side. Really? How come I haven't heard of this? News like that would spread like wild fire in the Resistance. It's a need-to-know-basis-only. If you don't know you don't need to know. Listen if you guys don't trust me, I can just go and take my information else where. No no fine ok. So guess we need to go to Mexico. How do we get to Mexico since Frank is being watched by the Japanese? That's easy - there will be a boat here in four days. You best all be on it; if you are not then you are not coming. Frank, are you sure you want to do this? Yes. It is the best chance for us to get out of here so we aren't hunted down like dogs and put down. This is a great chance for us. Once we leave here we never come back. We never look back. Just me and you starting a new life together, maybe even starting a family. It would be a better place for us, Juliana. Ok then lets' go get that tape and never come back. Four days have passed. Get on the boat. Don't ask any questions and don't talk to anyone else on this boat, ok? But why? Because I said so, Juliana. Just get on and be quiet. We don't want to draw any attention to us. Lem you got front and I'll get back, ok? Got it. Do you know what they are doing Joe? Well ,they are probably keeping lookout to see if any boat come towards us so they can be ready for a fight. But I could be wrong, I don't know. They don't have any shoes on. One of the kids sees Juliana and gets up and runs to her. She is giving the universal sign for begging, so Juliana automatically thinks she is asking for food. Juliana's face is in shock and tears are welling up in her eyes. The people that live here look depressed and beat down. None of them are dressed well. Frank can't believe what he is seeing either. They head deeper into town and it covered with people. They are being pushed around, people are bumping into them. There is so much sound, it is deafening. You can barely hear yourself think. Joe is quickly getting overwhelmed by all of it, so he tries to duck into a store. However they soon find that the store they go into isn't a store. There are kids sitting at four different tables cutting up drugs and putting them in packages. Behind them are men with MP-40s. They see Joe and scream at him in a language he doesn't understand. As they pull their guns up, Juliana goes into the store and pulls Joe out of there. They are aliens in a new world and they have no idea what to do. Lemmel and Karen arent fazed by any of this. Ok Joe what now? What did your contact say next? He said for me to call him once I reached Mexico. Just let me find a phone. Joe finally finds a phone but he had the pay the guy that owns it. I know every move you make, I know every breath you take. He lives on the big house overlooking the town. He is a very dangerous man. If he believes you are a danger to him, he will instantly kill you without hesitation. So find a way to get a meeting with him. Joe, best of luck to you. Heil Hitler. Heil Hitler. Joe hangs up the phone and finds everyone sitting at a table drinking some water. Juliana hands him a glass of water. So what did he say? Well, I got good news and I have bad news. The good news is that we got lucky and the film is in this town. Ok, what's the bad news? The bad news is that the drug lord that owns this town has it. He lives up in that house up there. That's all he could tell me. Ok, now leave the rest to us. There are some Resistance members here that might be able to help us. They live in a house that is just outside of town. Let's get there as fast as possible. I don't want to waste any time. The longer we wait, the sooner that film gets away from us. They head out of town to a lone house. It is a dilapidated house with the paint practically gone and the windows are either broken or completely gone. An hour passes by and Karen and Lemmel come out of the house. It's now night time everyone is ready to go to meet the drug lord. They head up the hill to his house and they immediately notice how well fortified his house is. There are two towers, each one with a sniper on top of it. Ok, so once we get in and see the film, Lem and I will get it. The other resistance member will take care of the guys out here so we don't have to worry about that. They head inside the main gate of the house. Behind him are two men with MP-40s Karen and Lemmel step towards him and begin to talk to him in a language that Juliana, Joe, and Frank don't understand. The drug lord gets up and goes to a box and takes out the film. Lemmel looks at Karen and nods. They pull their pistols out and start to shoot the drug lord. The two guards with him start shooting as well. Everything is almost in slow mo in Juliana's eyes. One of the guards kits Karen multiple times, killing her. Her body falls to floor and the film flies out of her hand and lands in front of Joe. He picks it up. Juliana and Frank begin to run out of the house. While running away, Lemmel is shot in the back but continues to run. Joe is right behind them running. Once they get outside, it is a war zone. Bullets are flying left and right and one bullet hits Joe, but it only grazes him. They see that the gate to the house is open and they make a break for it. They get into town and get into their hotel. Frank and Joe help Lemmel into the room, but he is bleeding badly and blood is coming out of his mouth. He is coughing up blood and it looks like there is nothing they can do. He looks at them and says, Get this film to where it needs to be. Make sure my wife and kids know that I died a hero. Please finish this for me, please make take my country back. Mine Führer. Danger
[rifle cocked] Heydrich scares me, John. If he simply wanted me dead, Helen, he wouldn't need to invite me hunting. Listen to me, Helen. If for whatever reason I don't make it back... don't let that man near our children. [knock on door] Please, come in. This belongs to you? Yes inspector and I'm prepared to make a full confession. [gunshot] You are the only one he trusts. You want me to kill him? You're asking me to kill a man in cold blood, to assassinate him. I can't do that. I'll do it. Good morning, John. I brought rifles for both of us, John. I prefer to use my own. I felt we should clear the air, you and I. We can speak candidly here. Nobody can hear us or reach us. I assumed that was the point. Loyalty is an overrated virtue, John. It's certainly not worthy of you. Neither is betrayal. The strong must overcome the weak. ep. ten A way out Worried
In some kind of trouble? Yeah. He is. What if something's happened to her? I'm sorry Juliana. It's not your fault. Don't worry. I'm ok. I warned you about racing down those stairs. Frank must be in some kind of trouble. 50,000 yen. I'll get it. Where are you getting that kind of money? That's my business. Psst. Jules. You have to come with me. And if I don't get 50,000 yen? You're not asking for my money? We'll find another way. You're Frank, right? You stupid son of a bitch. You killed those men. Ep. 9 Kindness In Man in the High Castle's tenth episode, "A Way Out," secrets are revealed. The shows start off right where last episode's cliffhanger ended. Juliana and Frank just finished watching the film that had Frank being executed by Joe. Tears are running down Juliana's face as they try to comprehend what the hell they just saw. Then Joe shows up. Frank refuses to hand the film over to Joe, which leads to them fighting each other. Joe leaves, which has Frank and Juliana wondering what are they going to do next. They reach out to Karen and Lemmel for help. They tell them what's on the film and that Joe has the film. The Resistance realizes how important this film actually is. Karen and Lemmel propose something to Juliana and Frank - in exchange for helping Juliana and Frank get on a boat to Mexico, Juliana must get the film from Joe and kill him. Juliana says she can't kill him in cold blood, so Lemmel says he will and that all Juliana has to do is lure him out of the Nazi embassy that Joe went to. Meanwhile, Kido finally finds the sniper that shot the crown prince and who is a Nazi agent. Kido doesn't even skip a beat and kills him right away. Kido explains to his partner that it was something has to be done. If word got out that the Nazis attacked the Japanese, a war would break out, and that's what the powerful Nazis want. Meanwhile, the Obergruppenführer is walking into a trap and he knows it. What the Obergruppenführer doesn't know is the details and what it means for him. The Obergruppenführer was asked to go on a hunting trip by Heydrich, the man he believes tried to have him killed. Meanwhile, Rudolph has just gotten back to Berlin to assassinate Hitler. But before he goes to see Hitler, he goes and sees his family. Its clear right away that Rudolph isn't just there for his family. But this is probably the final time that he will be seeing them. He bids them a very heartfelt and sad goodbye; you can feel the sadness. Back in San Francisco, Ed is trying to melt the gun that Frank made to kill the crown prince. He is about to melt it when he drops the gun and is seen by the foreman, which leads to his arrest. This also saves Kidos life because he was just about to preform seppuku, which is a form of suicide in the Japanese culture where if you fail your duties you must take your own life. When Frank finds out about this, he leaves Karen, who was about to head to the docks where they are going to kill Joe. Frank gets to the police station just in time to see Ed being taken away. Frank is screaming that it is his gun and that he made it, but Kido doesn't seem to care anymore. Juliana manages to help Joe escape the Nazi embassy where Joe realizes that he is going to be killed by Heydrich's men. She tells him of Lemmel and Karen's plan to kill him. But she tells Joe that she think she can they can both come out of this safe. Juliana brings Joe to the docks, but Joe quickly realizes that this is where they are going to kill him. He pleads with Juliana that he is a different man and that the man in the film isn't him. Juliana believe him and ruins the Resistance's plan to kill him. Juliana gets Joe on the boat that Frank and her were suppose to use to go to Mexico. Lemmel and Karen realize that she isn't going on with the plan, but it's too late for them to do anything because Joe is already on the boat. Meanwhile, Rudolph is on his way to meet Hitler and he sees that Hitler is watching some of the Grasshopper films. Rudolph can't grasp what exactly is going on, but Hitler seems to know more then he is letting on. While Rudolph is holding a gun to Hitler's face, Heydrich has captured the Obergruppenführer and is asking him to join his mission to start a war. The tension is building, but Rudolph refuses to kill Hitler and in turn ends up killing himself. The Obergruppenführer and Heydrich are at a table waiting for a phone to ring, and Heydrich believes it is going to be Rudolph saying that he has killed Hitler. But instead he hears Hitler's voice on the phone. Then, the man that is helping Heydrich is shot and killed and the Obergruppenführer is able to grab a gun and shoot and capture Heydrich as a traitor. Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, Tagomi heads to a park to contemplate everything that is happening and, Juliana's necklace in hand, to meditate. He closes his eyes, you hear the sounds around him building to a pitch before they stop and start again. But something sounds different. He opens his eyes he is in the same park but its changed. There is an American flag hanging from a pole. Rock music is playing in the background. He sees a newspaper that says "John F. Kennedy Setting Up an Arms Blockade Against Cuba."
In Man in the High Castle's ninth episode, "Kindness," helping each other is a big thing this episode. We start off with Frank at the bus stop with Ed waiting for Juliana. Ed tells Frank get on the bus and that he will send Juliana on another bus. Frank can't leave without her, telling Ed that maybe something bad happened. Meanwhile, Joe and Juliana are being held captive by the Yakuza. Lemmel and Karen, the Resistance operatives, pay the Yakuza ten thousand yen to get her back. But the Yakuza are keeping Joe for fifty thousand yen. Juliana says she will get the money. Juliana heads back to her apartment but she is stopped by a hiding Ed. He takes her back to his house where Frank is staying. Juliana tells them about her and Joe getting kidnapped by the Yakuza. Juliana asks Frank if she can use his forty six thousand yen to get Joe back. Franks agrees, but only if he is the one to get Joe back. While Lemmel and Karen are trying to figure out how to get Joe back, the Obergruppenführer is dealing with a potential uprising against him. He visits Erik, the man that was shot when the Obergruppenführer convoy was attacked. He tell him that he is very suspicious of Heydrich, a high ranking officer like the Obergruppenführer. He hands Erik a letter and tells him that if anything happens to him, to get this letter directly to Hitler. Heydrich has plan of his own though. He has released Rudolph from custody in the hopes of trying to exploit his connections and good will with the Führer. After telling Rudolph that what he has done is treason, he then says he has a mission for him to go to back to Berlin and kill Hitler. Meanwhile, Frank is on his way to save Joe. Before Frank meets up with the Yakuza, he goes to where he has hidden the gun he was going to use to kill the crown prince. Frank shows up where the Yakuza are holding Joe. He surprisingly gets Joe back without any fight. But of course, Joe has to have the film. The Yakuza say no. As they are leaving, Joe grabs the gun from Frank and shoots and kills the two Yakuza guards and tells the head of the Yakuza to hand over the tape, which he does. Frank and Joe narrowly escape from the Yakuza. They head back to Ed's place; Frank is ready to leave but the bus terminal is now asking for sufficient identification. Ed then gives them some money and says goodbye for now. The only person Juliana and Frank can turn to is Joe. The ask Joe if he can help them get out of town. Joe calls the Obergruppenführer telling him that he has the film but he had to kill two Yakuza members in the process. Joe also says that he needs help getting Juliana and Frank out of the city. The Obergruppenführer refuses to help Juliana and Frank. The Obergruppenführer has more important things to focus on rather than helping them. He discovers that Connolly is working Heydrich, who planed the hit on the Obergruppenführer and got Erik injured. The Obergruppenführer asks Connolly to meet him on the roof and for some reason, he accepts. As they are talking, the Obergruppenführer tells Connolly that he knows he is working for Heydrich, and he pushes him off the roof and tells everyone he committed suicide. Meanwhile, inspector Kido is doing a cover up of his own. He meets with the Yakuza boss to talk about Frank and Joe. The Yakuza boss lets Kido know that Frank wasn't the shooter and that he thinks they are covering something up. He thinks that a sniper from an opposing tower shot the crown prince and it was a Nazi agent. He says that Kido is covering this up because it is an act of war. While the Nazis are ready for a fight, the Japanese aren't. This makes Frank Kido's scapegoat. But it seems the crown prince, after being shot, has a renewed interest in taking on the Nazis. Meanwhile, Juliana and Frank are waiting at a school that they told Joe to meet them at. While waiting, Frank asks her what makes this film so different. This makes Juliana set it up in the auditorium of the school. They turn the film on and see a war torn country and then the see a firing squad putting people on their knees for execution. The last man we see getting put on there knees is Frank. Each man is executed one by one even Frank but another shocking thing is the camera pulls back and you see that it was Joe who killed Frank.
